Spicy Grapefruit and Jalapeño Cocktail

Yum

It feels like every time the weather starts to look promising, yet another week of snow, wind and cold charges through this city with conviction. The days are getting longer though and the sun does shine on occasion, so I just have this feeling that we’re mere days (or weeks) away from hanging up those parkas for good and switching from boots to flip flops.

Winter may be sticking around longer than desired, but I refuse to let Mother Nature keep me from the fresh, vibrant flavours of spring/summer any longer! If the sun won’t shine, well god dammit, I’ll drink enough to pretend it is.

This spicy grapefruit cocktail is a burst of interesting and unique flavours that (if you shut your eyes and drink enough to warm your insides) will make you feel like you’re lying on the dock on a warm Saturday afternoon. Cheers!

Instructions

  1. To make the jalapeño syrup, combine the water, sugar, and jalapeño peppers in a sauce pan and simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes. Use the end of a wooden spoon to muddle the peppers and release the flavours. Strain the syrup and let cool in the freezer for 20 minutes before using
  2. To rim the glass, pour 2 tbsp of sugar on a small plate. Dip the rim of the glass in the grapefruit juice and then into the sugar, and place in the freezer to chill before use
  3. In a separate glass or jug, combine the 1/2 cup grapefruit juice, 2 ounces of tequila and 1/3 cup soda water with 2 tbsp of jalapeño syrup per one cocktail (adjust for number serving)
  4. Remove the glasses from the freezer, place ice in the bottom of each, and pour in the cocktail. Garnish with fresh jalapeño pepper rounds and grapefruit slices. Cheers!
