A study conducted by Ohio State University found that nearly 70 percent of college students claimed to be stressed about money. If you are going to college full-time, chances are you will not be able to earn a lot of money until you get your degree. Finding ways to save money is essential for college students living on a tight budget.

One of the biggest expenses you will have while away at school is your grocery bill. Eating a steady diet of fast food is not only unhealthy, it can be very expensive. Buying groceries and cooking at your apartment or dorm room can save you lots of money.

The following are some helpful tips for college students attempting to grocery shop on a budget.

  1. Buying in Bulk is a Great Idea

If you eat pretty much the same thing every week, you could probably benefit from buying a few things in bulk. There are a number of stores, like Sam’s Club and Costco that offer great deals on bulk items. Buying things like bulk Skittles candies make it easy to taste the rainbow and save money at the same time.

Often times, stores that specialize in selling bulk items will require you to pay a membership fee. Once you figure out how much you can save by shopping in one of these establishments, you will quickly realize that the membership fee is worth it.

  1. Compare Prices Before Deciding on a Grocery Store to Shop At

The worst mistake you can make when trying to grocery shop on a budget is failing to compare prices. Most areas have a number of different grocery stores to choose from. Before selecting a store to shop at, you will need to visit each one to get a feel for what they charge.

Taking in a list of the items you need can help you get the information you need. While this will take some time and effort, it is worth it considering the money it can help you save.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Buy Store Brands

Some people have the misconception that buying store brand items is a bad thing. Usually, these items will taste the same as their expensive counterparts. Most grocery stores will have their own brands that will be priced well below their competitors. Giving these store brands a try is the only way to figure out whether or not they have the taste you are after. Check out all the groceries near the University, don’t be lazy, this can save you around hundreds of dollars just because you did a great research.

  1. Shopping Cheap Doesn’t Mean You Can’t Eat Healthy

While foods that are considered junk are usually cheaper than fruits and vegetables, this doesn’t mean you have to buy them. Spending a bit more on items that are healthy is worth it. One of the best ways you can save money at the grocery store and stay healthy is by cutting out sodas.

Instead of wasting money on these sugar-filled drinks, you need to think about drinking only water. You can typically get waters for a relatively inexpensive price, especially if you buy a case at a time.

  1. Limit the Amount of Treats You Buy

Who doesn’t like to have a box of their favorite candies lying around? Having these treats in your home is a great idea, but you need to buy them in moderation. Instead of buying 10 different types of candy at the grocery store, you need to buy a box a week to conserve your resources. Showing this type of restraint will help you avoid consuming too much sugar and will help you maintain your grocery budget.

You can also try things like couponing to save money at the grocery store. As a college student, you will have to find a way to stretch a dollar to make ends meet.
